Consult 4

The amount of tools per block is defined by a certain premade number. It is better to make this variably by the user. So new tools can be added and old tools can be replaced.

Make a clear list of tools, which tools are the biggest and which one are the smallest.

Are the block different in height? It will be necessary for big tools but not for small tools. There is the option to stack small blocks on bigger blocks.

The block itself could be expensive depending on production. there is a lot of volume that needs to be produced. Try to reduce this or simplify the shape.

Make a system for the blocks. Make is so the blocks are produced via a certain method where you don't need a lot of different machines to produce it.
Make a block that can be assembled by the user. So the complexity of assembly lies with the user and not with the producer.

Don't use conic shape connections it will create tension and the block will be difficult to remove.

User flow

1) At the workspace at home there is a wall. On the wall there will be blocks connected, these block are angle so it is easy to take the tools out.

2) The user takes a handle with a certain amount of premade connectors (5-6). Then he can choose which blocks he needs on the job. He takes the blocks off the wall and slides them into the connectors of the handle.

3) All the blocks can now be picked up with the handle and be placed in the car/ van.

4) On location to tools can be taken out the car/ van with the handle.

5) The user has an top overview over all the tools, if necessary the blocks can be taken out individually.

Idea 3 : Blocks 2

We further expended our idea of blocks by adding a bottom, no the tool module can stand on its own. In this drawing the module has two connectors on each side, this number will vary depending on the seize of the module. These modules will slide in one another.

We also thought about a central piece with connectors and a handle to carry the modules. The amount of connecters we actually are planning to use is around 5-6.

Depending on the type of material we want to use different connection methods. These are some examples. The connecters will have a conical shape so the modules don't slide off when we carry them.

This is an example on how the work area would look at home, the modules will be angled so it is easy to take tools out of them. on the wall there will also be connectors placed.

Iteration Idea 3: Blocks

In this post we discust a little more idea number 3 from the previous post.

We tought about the connection between the blocks, a transportation manner (to carry on and drive around)

Our main target group is a mechanic.

For every tool there will be a block. Every block can be connected to an other in any horizontal way, by using an special connection method.

We will also make some hooks which work with the same connection system to attatch the blocks on the wall. like this.

To carry on the toolbox, the user chooses the required tools and connect the beld on the blocks. Now he can carry the tools arround like a messenger bag.

To transport the tools in the workers van. We developed a small bag which stands stable in the van. at the edges you can connect the blocks. With the same connection system as before. the bag gives also extra space for raw materials.

Consult 3

We had feedback on our different ideas

Idea 1:
Umbrella with tools

The concept is to complex to use. There are also geometric problems when you want to close the umbrella with the tools. There  isn’t enough space to close it.

Idea 2:
Sections with a certain amount of holes to put tools in

It isn't modular enough yet. The size of the section have to vary more. There is also a transport problem, when you put the tools down the tools will come lose.

Idea 3:
Premade frames with bars and loops.

The tools are to individual stored. it can become very complex with multiple small tools, which will also make it expensive.
There isn't a good overview over the tools and there is a transport problem again.

It would be better if there are "families" of tools which are stored together so the user can choose what he needs.

Idea 2 and 3

Umbrella idea.

We wanted to explore the umbrella idea a little bit more. So we started by making a paper origami umbrella.

In this easy model we could see how the umbrella folds open and close in a material a bit more stif than the flexible material.

After we made the smal umbrella we made a storyboard.

The idea constists in a toolbox which you can take triangle shaped pieces with tools from your workstation. You would place them in a frame, and take it allong with you. If you arrive at the workstation. You open the frame and the tools are well organised in the frame. like a little table.

Biggest disadvantage: possible that the toolboxx will not close. You can bring max 8 pannels.

2 prototypes in cardboard to see the effect of a harder pannel.

Idea 3

In this idea we would use some small blocks, which can be brought together with a simple click. if you leave the workstation. You take the bloks you need allong with you.

Extra ideation instructables

As extra information for the concept organiser toolbox, we looked at some instructables.

Now we know what is already made. And what the isues in those prototypes were.

Carving tool organiser

Mobile peg board toolstand

New Idea

After the last consult we had to come up with a better solution. preferably multiple solutions.

The new idea consists of two parts: a standardized part which holds the tools and a frame which will secure the holder parts.

The holder part is made of a cylindrical bar with two loops. the loops have a sliding mechanism so that the tool can be secure without coming lose.

Tis bar will then be connected to the frame. There are multiple holes in the frame which will hold the bar.

deadline 1 feedback

  • Think about the most extreme tools
    • Saw, hammer, glue clamp
    • Think about the measurments of the tools
  • How to organise the tools?
    • organisation at home, in the workplace
    •  has to go fast, don't lose time to get everything (time is money)
  • Not a big fan of the roll idea.
    • Has to be more modular.
    • Think about how to arrange the tools at home?
    • What about the part that is not used? Always have to bring allong everything of the roll.
    • You always have to open the whole role and close the whole role to get the tool
  •  How do you know you did not forget anything?

 Next week:
new more modular ideas. Think about the organisation.
Hi quality sketches/pictures on the blog

New ideas:

Modular bands, think about the umbrella idea, modular plate
Work with colors for the organisation

Prototype 2

We found our previous idea not good because it was too big and unhandy to use.

So we created a new and more simple concept.
The concept consists of twee pieces of fabric with multiple small sliders around them. This makes it possible to move the sliders over the fabric.
The main idea is that the tools come inbetween  the two pieces of fabric and that the slider is pushed against it (see pictures below)
After that the tools can be wrapped around itself so it doesn't take much space.

This is the main idea in order of functionality. We still have to integrate a functional way to keep the tools wrapped up.

New idea

In this sketch we will see the next idea. It is a modular system whch can be placed in a bagpack. This will order the tools in a modular way.

An other idea is to use a textile. This will make the toolbox easy to carry and allows the user to get his tools quickly.

The main idea is based on the bag of street sellers in Barcelona.

Those bags allows the sellers to quickly pack their goods and leave before the police commes around.

With this idea we came to the next Q&D prototype. Based on the principe of an umbrella. The tools would be attatched with a flexible band. Because of the cirkle form there will be a perfect overview of all the tools.

Consult 1

Consult 7/3/2017

The main goal of the course is to make a orginaser for a specific target audience. The organisation is the most important, the biggest challenge.

To organise it is important to be able to take the tools in batches or individualy with you. To safe time when you start your work preparation. The modular pieces can be arranged at home as well.

Technical details are very important in this assignement. It has to be a ready to produce product at the end.

The tools have to stay in order when the tools are transfered.

Feedback on the prototype:
Rotation system is one solution but not the innovative. To make it customisable is more innovative.

Next week:
There has to be a main functionlaity with multiple solutions for smaller problems, like snap connections or rotating elements.

Q&D prototype

In this prototype we used 3 costumisable modules.  These modules rotate around 2 axis. There are different compartments and there is a flexible part that can be rolled up.

Inspiration

We started by using pinterest to see which toolbox designs already exist.

pinterest board toolbox

Our main idea is to develop a toolbox that is modular and costumizable for the users. The user can choose for themself how to organise their tools.

ToolBox

This blog will be used to document the design and process a toolbox. This will be done for the subject: Material & process oriented design.

The updates will be done by Yannick Stoelen and Thomas Fiermans
